ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE KNOWN, UNRECORDED BY SHIRLEY. This diagrammatic map of England and Wales is the only one known NOT centred on London. The city of Bristol is the focus of this one. Beyond the date provided by the mapmaker Charles Douglas of August 1737, we know little else. The engraver is named as George Child (fl.1737-53) who is recorded as working in Long Acre, London. He is referred to in the Dictionary of British Map Engravers and this must be considered one of Child’s earliest works. The map is not listed in Shirley’s work on maps of the British Isles. An extensive search of the British Book Trade Index, ESTC, Library Hub and other sources has not revealed any information. The map is diagrammatic, displaying the roads emanating from Bristol. The distances between towns are noted and each county is highlighted by an engraved line bearing no relation to its actual scale. This school of mapping concentrates on recording the roads. The main title is displayed in a cartouche upper right. There are very few of these maps ever published of England and Wales, the majority were separately issued and are extremely rare. Shirley included in his work a list of those known. Not in Shirley (1991); Worms & Baynton-Williams (2011).
