George Louis Le Rouge (1704-c.1790) published a map of the British Isles in 1744. The following year this map of England and Wales was published. Shirley only records one state but a second is known with the date removed from the title cartouche. It appears he was born in Hannover 28 August 1704, where the parents who are recorded as being French went by the name of Noel and Maria Anna Rouger. Upon their return to France, George Louis Le Rouge became a military engineer for the French and took up cartography from about 1740 in the Rue des Grands Augustins, Paris. He was made Geographe du Roy by Louis XV and died in 1778. Provenance: Clive A. Burden Ltd.; Doreen Green 2003. Oehme (1971); Shirley (1988) Le Rouge 2; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
