FIRST EDITION. Ralph Thoresby (1658-1725) was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, the son of a merchant. Following in his father’s footsteps he also had a similar interest as an antiquarian. He became a fellow of the Royal Society, was a diarist and famously wrote this, the first history of Leeds. From the early 1690s he turned his attention towards the history. It details the landed gentry in the region and also included details of his own museum of collectable antiquities. Amongst his acquaintances was Samuel Buck whom he supported in his series of panoramas of English towns. With an extensive six-page list of subscribers. Provenance: bookplate of Stansfeld pasted inside upper cover; ‘R. Croysdale, 317 Lidgett Lane, Leeds’ in ink on front endpaper; Charles Traylen 2001; private English collection. ESTC T139372; ODNB; Upcott (1968) 1381.
