A good large scale map of the River Nile by one of the finest French cartographers of the eighteenth century. The map extends as far inland as Aswan and takes in the Red Sea. Detail includes the location of ancient ruins along with emerald mines and various caravan routes. D’Anville (1697-1782) is said to have produced his first map at the age 15, he followed Guillaume de L’Isle as cartographer to the King. His vast collection of cartographic material survives today. D’Anville’s maps of many areas of the world were among the most influential of the century. ‘To illustrate the cartography of the second half of the eighteenth century, a D’Anville map is essential. He dominated not only French but all contemporary geographers [and] his aim was reform, the rejection of plagiarism, critical examination of authorities, a basis of astronomical observation and the deletion of unverified material’ R.V. Tooley. Shirley (2004) T.Anv 2a no. 29; Tooley’s Dictionary (1999-2004).
