FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE AND UNCUT. Rudolph Ackermann’s University of Oxford is one of the great early English aquatint colour-plate books published by him. In th elate eighteenth century the new medium of aquatinting afforded a high level of image akin to that of a watercolour. Ackermann seized the technique to produce this and other wonderful works. They are rightly recognised as a great contribution to the field. This example is without the founders plates which were not published until April 1815. Plate 50 is present in its first state with the date May 1. The text to the ‘History of the University of Oxford’ is ascribed variably to William Combe (1742-1823) and Frederic Shoberl (1775-1853). AN UNCUT COPY with the plates BRIGHTLY COLOURED IN CONTEMPORARY MOROCCO BINDING. Provenance: Library at Linley Hall, Shropshire, Sir Jasper and Lady More. Abbey Scenery 280; Tooley 5.
