Jacob George Strutt (1784-1867) was a landscape etcher and painter in the style of John Constable (1776-1837). Born in Colchester, one of eight children. He was not trained as a botanical artist so he excelled more at forest scenes than depicting tree anatomy. He may well have studied with Constable. He was a capable engraver also. From 1824 to 1831 he exhibited his work on forest scenery publishing the ‘Sylva Britannica; or, Portraits of Forest Trees distinguished for their Antiquity, Magnitude or Beauty’ in 1822-[26]. About 1831 he moved to Lausanne, eventually settling in Rome to work on the Italian landscape. He returned to London in 1851. Nissen BBI (1996) 1907; ODNB; not in De Belder, ‘Oak Spring Sylva’ or Plesch.
