These classic engravings record the work of Raphael Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520) in decorating the Loggie in the Vatican apartments between 1518-19 for Pope Leo X. This work entitled ‘Delle Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano’ was engraved by Giovanni Ottaviani (c.1734-1808) and Giovanni Volpato (1735-1803) and is remarkable for its size and the magnificent colouring found in contemporary-coloured examples. They were to have considerable influence on contemporary taste in the neo-classical period. A reduction was published in Paris 1787-90 in which two panels appear on each plate. They were beautifully engraved by J. Sticotti and published by Francois Chereau and Francois-Etienne Joubert. An edition was published in Rome around 1802. They were beautifully engraved by Carlo Lasinio under the direction of Rainaldi after the drawings of Camporesi. Brunet (1860-80) IV, pp. 1110-11; Berlin Cat. (1939) no. 4068 & 4070; ‘Universal Catalogue of Books on Art’ II p. 1689.
