The publishers of the rare ‘Nederlandsche Bloemwerk’ were members of the society of Dutch nurserymen. The author of this work is unknown and it is usually listed under its title. The work was issued to subscribers, only 66 are named. Both Nissen and Plesch assign the engraving to Paul Theodor can Brussel (1754-95), though he signs only one plate. The bugs, caterpillars and moths are reminiscent of the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. Dunthorne (1938) 215; ‘Great Flower Books’ (1956) p. 47; Hunt (1958) 733; Landwehr (1976) 29; Nissen BBI (1966) 2219.
