John Cowley’s work was original ‘Written originally in High Dutch by the late celebrated Mr. Hubner, and now faithfully translated, with Additions and Improvements’ as cited on the title. Johann Huebner (1668-1731) was an historian and geographer from Hamburg, Germany. He worked closely with Johann Baptist Homann and produced the ‘Kleiner Altas Scholasticus’, c.1715, for him. Cowley (fl.1733-44) was a political writer and geographer who became Geographer to the King in 1741. This translation was first published in 1738 and was issued seven times, this being the final edition. Beyond some minor additions of plate numbers etc. in the fourth edition, the maps remained the same throughout. The maps are engraved by John Cowley and Emanual Bowen. An interesting dictionary is found at the end of the work which provides the modern name equivalent to ancient place-names. The work is surprisingly rare.
