A very attractive map of the western Mediterranean Sea extending from Sicily and Malta in the east to the Straits of Gibraltar in the west. Despite being entitled a map of the sea it is a topographical map showing great detail. The map is complete as is but there was issued a further map of the eastern Mediterranean which matches. A large decorative cartouche lower left contains female figures representing the regions and a recumbent lion next to a native African figure. William Faden (1749-1836) joined the firm of Thomas Jefferys two years after Jefferys’ death in 1771. By 1783 he was in control of the firm.
