A very attractive map of the western Mediterranean Sea extending from Sicily and Malta in the east to the Straits of Gibraltar in the west. Despite being entitled a map of the sea it is a topographical map showing great detail. The map is complete as is but there was issued a further map of the eastern Mediterranean which matches. A large decorative cartouche lower left contains female figures representing the regions and a recumbent lion next to a native African figure. William Faden (1749-1836) joined the firm of Thomas Jefferys two years after Jefferys’ death in 1771. By 1783 he was in control of the firm. He is particularly noted for undertaking new surveys and for publishing foreign works in England. Shirley (BL Atlases) T.FAD-4a, nos. 20.
