This is arguably the finest chart published of Cape Breton. It details the coastal features including the ‘Ruins of Ft. Dauphin’ and the ‘Ruins of Ft. William’. The chart is centred on what is now the town and harbour of Sydney, the main populated region of the island. Nearby is Ice Bay [Glace Bay]. It appeared in the ‘Atlantic Neptune’ which is a magnificent four-volume atlas of sea charts and views of the east coast of North America, published during the American Revolutionary War by Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (1722-1824). The National Maritime Museum possesses one of the finest collections of Des Barres charts and they identify two states of this map. This is the first state lacking the imprint of ‘Oct 1st 1781’ found in the second. Not in Kershaw; Sellers & Van Ee (1981) 327.
