A very unusual small map of the region of the Fleet in London. To the west side can be seen the famous Fleet Prison. It was initially built in 1197 and rebuilt at various times until pulled down in 1846. Prisoners did not have to live within the prison itself and were allowed to live within the ‘Liberty of the Fleet’ or ‘Rules of the Fleet’, as long as they paid the prison keeper for his loss. Prisons were run privately the keeper taking earnings from prisoners for food, lodging and even for turning keys and removing irons.
