William Faden (1749-1836) worked in partnership with Thomas Jefferys before taking control of the business in 1783 not long after his death. In 1781 Faden published the first state of this road map of Great Britain. It is dedicated to John Henniker one of the Barons of the Cinque Ports. The road network is laid out with distances between points marked and those to London circled. An inset upper right includes Scotland. A separate French title runs outside the border at the top which reflects Faden’s predecessor’s market presence in France. Something Faden clearly inherited. Beneath the title the date 1787 records this as being the second edition despite the existence of a 1783 issue. There is also an imprint date below recording 10 April 1788. There were later editions in 1795 and by James Wyld in 1830 & 33. The map is housed in a contemporary marbled paper slipcase with publisher’s title label. Also affixed is that of the original mapseller “Bull, Bookseller & Stationer on the Lower Walk, Bath”. This map appears to be quite rare as very few references to it could be found. Provenance: private English. This edition not in the British Library.
