This plan of the entrance into Canton in China shows the lack of intimate knowledge of its waters. Portions of the coastline are omitted entirely. Present though is the Portuguese colony of Macao. To the left is an inset plan of Canton. It comes from an English edition of Jean Baptiste Du Halde’s “A General History of China”. First published in Paris in 1735 by the Jesuit priest du Halde. He was the confessor to Louis XIV but despite having never been to China he diligently collected Jesuit reports from the country. Refer to Shirley “Atlases in the British Library” T.Hald 1a.
