From Edmund Gibson’s edition of Camden’s ‘Britannia’. Gibson announced that his maps engraved by Robert Morden utilised unpublished surveys where available and the knowledge of local gentlemen who supplied corrections. Morden was an accomplished bookseller and publisher who contributed a great deal to geography and cartography. ‘Britannia’ was first published in 1695, and subsequently in 1722, c.1730, 1753 & 1772. This particular map of Scotland however only appeared in the first edition. For the 1722 issue separate maps of north and south Scotland were engraved in recognition of unification. It is often trimmed in the book being a slightly larger plate than most but this example is a fine copy being printed on large paper. Moir, D.G. I, p.176; Skelton no. 117.
