This beautifully engraved map is one of a number of highly decorative maps that Vrients introduced into the ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ atlas following his acquisition of the Ortelius copperplates. In 1592 Petrus Plancius produced a fine map of France published by Cornelis Claesz. One of the alterations that Vrients made to the Ortelius atlas was to introduce or replace a number of maps. One of these was that of France for which the 1592 Plancius was the model. The engraver is unknown. Introduced in the 1606 atlas this example is from the 1612 Latin edition of the atlas. A fabulously engraved map. Schilder ‘Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandici’ VII pp. 385-6; Van der Broecke no. 36.
