Giovanni Francesco Camocio (fl.1558-c.75) was an active book and map seller in Venice. This is the first of two copper plate maps of Cyprus that he published and is dated 1566. At this point in time the Venetians were still in control of the Island. It is derived from the first great map of the island by Matheo Pagano of 1538. It is in the ornamentation that the map differs, Camocio inserting a number of ships and sea monsters. The map is found in Lafreri style atlases of the period. Hadjipaschalis & Iacovou (1989) no. 6; Stylianou (1980) no. 30 fig. 36; Stylianou (1984) ‘Some Highlights from the History of the Cartography of Cyprus’, in IMCoS Journal no. 16 pp. 14-16; Tooley (1939) no. 183; Zacharakis (1992) ‘A Catalogue of Printed Maps of Greece, 1477-1800’, no. 1642.
