A fairly clean example of this elusive atlas, originally designed to advertise Arbuckle’s Coffee. The atlas is printed on loose sheets and bound together with the original twisted string tie, altogether 12 sheets, each with four beautiful chromolithographic maps of the States. From the mid-1800’s the Arbuckle Bros. Coffee Company began to include advertising cards, commonly referred to as “trade cards” in packages of their coffee. This was a common practice used by companies at the time to tout the virtues of their products. But the Arbuckle Company carried the concept a step further and created a series of very desirable images. They included a number of subjects from birds, animals, satire, sports, cooking and maps. The map series, U.S. States and Nations of the World, proved to be extremely popular. Both series were reissued in album format, available from the company as a mail-order premium. Whilst the cards and maps can still be found today, the company, ‘Arbuckles’, ceased to be about 60 years ago.
