The publishing firm of Colton was founded by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-93) in 1831 in New York. His major work was the ‘Atlas of the World’ first published in 1855. Included in this first edition is this map which it appears is usually found uncoloured. It features at the top a map of the Hawaiian chain of islands with smaller maps below of New Zealand, ‘Feejee Islands’, Tonga, Society, Marquesas and Galapagos Islands. Ristow p. 325.
