AN UNRECORDED STATE of this map. It was first published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in the ‘New General Atlas’ in 1863. The records and Baskes record that the map was here dated 1863. There are several later issues of this map but this dated 1860 is entirely unrecorded although interestingly it still depicts West Virginia at its statehood after 20 June 1863. There is evidence to suggest that Mitchell wasn’t in fact either a cartographer or engraver, his role is more that of an editor. The chief cartographer and engraver of Mitchell’s publications is James H Young although in this example he used W H Gamble. Refer Baskes 53.
