Jacques Gerard Milbert (1766-1840) was appointed as an official artist to Nicolas Baudin for his expedition to Australia (1800-1803) and sailed in ‘Le Géographe’ as far as Mauritius where he remained because of illness. In 1815 he travelled to the United States for the Museum of Natural History in Paris. During his time there he collected more than 8,000 specimens of flora and fauna. Milbert also brought back with him his sketches from which he produced a series of lithographs. These were published in 1828 in ‘Itineraire Pittoresque du Fleuve Hudson’. A fine street scene in Albany, New York. Howes M592; Sabin 48916; Streeter sale 2:910.
