The first separate printed view of a Philadelphia building” (Snyder). Published in 1752 this London engraving was drawn from the famous view and plan by George Heap published in Philadelphia earlier in the same year. It is a famous image of the Philadelphia Statehouse which was issued surmounting his and Nicholas Scull’s map of Philadelphia, published in that city by William Bradford and David Hall. It is of legendary rarity and only one example survives of the first state. An example of it either made its way to London with haste, or a proof was taken over, as within three months of its issue the ‘Gentleman’s Magazine’ in London published this engraving. It is interesting that they chose to illustrate the view first rather than the plan which did not appear until August 1753. The Statehouse would of course famously be renamed later as Independence Hall. As the Scull and Heap is practically unobtainable this represents the earliest available view of a building in the city. Snyder ‘City of Independence’, no. 14.
