A desirable detailed map derived from John Arrowsmith’s famous earlier work. The map is from Dr. Karl Sohr’s “Hand-Atlas” published 1846 by Carl Flemming. The name Sohr was fictitious and used to conceal the youth of Friedrich H. Handtke and lack of reputation. Flemming founded a successful publishing firm in the German town of Glogau. There were at the time of publication large numbers of German’s emigrating to the United States with Texas in particular receiving a large portion. During its Independence from 1836-45 over 10,000 chose to settle within its borders. With an inset of Galveston Bay lower left. Texas is depicted in its earlier Republic dimensions with the various districts named in the upper right corner. Day, J.M. p.37; Tooley Dictionary.
